Choosing Asphalt Roofing Shingles

Most homes in America use asphalt shingles as the primary roofing material. Yet, not all asphalt shingles are the same. The difference in price for asphalt shingles is determined by how the shingles are made or manufactured.

There are three types of shingles based on the materials used. You may purchase composition shingles that have a fiberglass core. This creates a composite shingle of asphalt and fiberglass.

Another shingle you might choose for your home is called an organic shingle. The core in these asphalt shingles is made of wood with paper fibers. This shingle is rarely used since it doesn't last nearly as long as other types of shingles. Organic is not always the best way to go when dealing with home investments that you expect to last.

The third type of shingle that is commonly used on homes is fiberglass shingles. The fiberglass has increased resistance to moisture and fire. It is also lightweight and much easier to work with during installation.

Shingles in Home Design

There are also several types of shingles that have more to do with shape and style than structure or strength. The normal or traditional shingle is rectangular with three tabs along one side. They are called strip shingles but give the look of individual shingles. They are less labor-intensive than individual shingles to install.

Laminated shingles (aka architectural shingles, aka three-dimensional) can create dramatic effects and enhance your home's overall look.

Interlocking shingles are stronger because of the locking together, especially in windy or stormy climates.

Individual shingles are expensive to have installed simply because installation is labor-intensive. Homeowners who choose this type of shingle are usually after the dramatic effects and designs that can be organized with this type of roofing.

Style and durability are important when you choose your shingles, but make sure the warranty on the product is long and strong. Many manufacturers issue warranties of up to fifty years. However, many also have strict clauses about how the roofing materials must be installed and maintained, or the warranty is void.

Summary:

One of the first things many people notice about your home is the roof. Not all roofing shingles are created equal. Buying sturdy materials that last and look good for a long time help to keep your home value high. If the architecture of your home is relatively simple, choosing some of the fancier three-dimensional shingles may enhance the look and style of your home and increase the overall value.
